StepCharge Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 22, 2026
Summary: StepCharge keeps sensitive data (steps, app usage, protected apps, timers) on your device only. We do not run our own servers or user accounts. The app uses Google Firebase Analytics to collect limited, anonymous usage events (for example, when you open the app or change a setting) to improve the product. We do not show ads and do not sell your data.
StepCharge (“we”, “our”, or “the app”) is an Android application that helps you reduce distracting phone use by linking app access to physical activity. This policy explains how we handle information when you use StepCharge.
Information Processed on Your Device
To provide its features, the app may process the following locally on your phone:
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Step count / motion activity | Detect walking and unlock or earn app time |
| List of installed apps | Let you choose which apps to protect |
| Foreground app usage | Detect when a protected app is open |
| App preferences | Protected apps, modes (gate/budget), buffer time, onboarding status |
| Protection state | Whether protection is on, unlock/block timers |
This information is stored in your device’s local app storage and is not sent to our servers. We do not operate servers for this app.
Analytics (Firebase)
To understand how the app is used and fix problems, StepCharge uses Google Firebase Analytics, a service provided by Google LLC. This is separate from the on-device protection features above.
Firebase Analytics may collect:
- App interaction events — for example app open, onboarding completed, protection toggled, share tapped, or update banner shown (no app names you protect, no step counts, no screen content)
- Device or other identifiers — such as an advertising ID or Firebase installation ID, used by Google to distinguish installs and measure analytics
- Basic device / app metadata — such as app version, device model, and OS version (as provided by the Firebase SDK)
This analytics data is sent to Google over an encrypted connection. We do not use Firebase to collect your step count, which apps you protect, foreground app usage, or block/unlock timers. Google may process analytics data according to its own policies. See Google’s Privacy Policy and Firebase’s privacy information.
StepCharge does not include advertising SDKs and does not display third-party ads. Analytics may still use an advertising identifier for measurement purposes only.
Permissions
StepCharge requests Android permissions only to deliver its features:
- Usage access — detect which app is in the foreground
- Activity recognition — read step count / movement
- Display over other apps — show block screen and timer overlays
- Notifications — show a persistent notification while protection is running
- Foreground service — monitor apps in the background
- Boot completed — restart protection after device reboot
- Battery optimization exemption (optional) — improve reliability of background monitoring
You can revoke permissions in Android Settings at any time. Some features may stop working if required permissions are denied.
Data Sharing
We do not sell or rent your data. Sensitive on-device data (steps, protected apps, usage monitoring) is not shared with third parties.
Limited analytics data described above is processed by Google (Firebase Analytics) as our analytics provider. We do not share data with other third parties for their advertising.
Data Retention and Deletion
On-device data remains on your phone until you:
- Clear app data in Android Settings → Apps → StepCharge → Storage → Clear data, or
- Uninstall the app
Uninstalling StepCharge removes locally stored app data from your device.
Analytics data held by Google is retained according to Firebase / Google Analytics settings and policies. Uninstalling the app stops new analytics events from this install. To learn about Google’s retention or deletion options, see Firebase privacy documentation.
Children’s Privacy
StepCharge is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
Sensitive app data is processed and stored locally on your device using Android’s standard app sandbox. Analytics events sent to Firebase use encrypted transport (HTTPS). We do not operate our own backend servers for StepCharge features.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date will be revised when changes are made. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
